08 May: Construction site ahead!
Essentialy you just need a board, chess pieces and a clock to play a game of chess, so Vishy Anand and Boris Gelfand could just play anywhere. But…playing a match for the world championship is a different piece of cake and since the match will be be played in the wonderful Tretyakov State Gallery (http://www.tretyakovgallery.ru/en/) in the Russian capital Moscow, lots of time and effort is needed to create the best possible environment for the players, the audience, the representatives of the press, arbiters, important guests and FIDE officials. Important questions like: “where is the VIP room?” and: “where I do find the buffet?” need to be answered.
Today, on Tuesday 08 May the first official appointment for the players and their delegations was planned at 17.00 local time: the inspection of the venue. Tomorrow I will post some pictures of the players, but today I want to show you some of the ongoing work in the Tretyakov State Gallery. Although it still looks messy, one can already see, three days before the start of the match, that the playing hall is going to look absolutely stunning!
This was the first sight of the entrance of the Tretyakov Gallery. The worker on the right hand side is not really in a hurry to get things ready.
The entrance for….
…representatives of the press and guests, who will get their badges here. BTW, the entrance is free for everybody!
We’re getting closer to the stage…
Ah, I can already see a chess board!
The stage, the board and a big digital board for the spectators to follow the game from the auditorium. Let’s go on stage…
Let’s hope the workers don’t forget this construction frame, although chief arbiter Ashot Vardapetyan would have a perfect view from the top.
Now that is a fine choice of chairs for the players…
The digital board on the stage. Look at the names of the players! The old and new president Vladimir Putin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_putin) playing against Gennady Zyuganov, First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gennady_Zyuganov).
Yours truly and Hans-Walter Schmitt took the opportunity to play a couple of moves on the world championship board! Draw agreed after 7 moves (Slav defence). I played white (Putin). We have the same haircut.
Walking through the Gallery with the players, Makropoulos, Gelfer, Levitov and others.
Creating space for players and spectators.
A sneak preview of the stage on the monitors, which are placed all over the place. It’s gonna be good!
